Chloramine Removal, Chloramation of Mains Water in UK Blog post on Chloramine Removal,

Chloramination of Mains Drinking Water.

It has recently come to our attention that certain water companies are proposing they add small amounts of ammonia to mains drinking water to chemically react with the Chlorine present to form a chemical called Chloramine.

Most of the UK mains drinking water contains chlorine, it has to, as chlorine kills bacteria that may build up within mains water pipes and your home so that you don?t end up with stomach upsets through your drinking water. It is the most cost effective way otherwise every household would require a UV system ? which not everyone could afford and not necessarily the room ? not to mention yearly maintenance of changing bulbs, filters and undergoing water quality test reports ? like most properties do if they are on a private water supply (Well/Borehole etc.)

The published idea of adding ammonia to the mains drinking water is to eliminate the taste and smell of chlorine from your drinking water, however this chemically reacts to form Chloramine. Which although would still disinfect the mains water pipes and your home without the odour and taste, it will still be present in your drinking water, which has caused some concern with our customers.

In this publication from a water board within the UK, They state that chloramination is a safe way to disinfect the water, however there are warnings in this publication that if you are on kidney dialysis or if you have aquariums then ?equipment modifications may be required? But even if you don?t have an aquarium, or are not on kidney dialysis, who wants to drink water with ANY chemical in it? I sure don?t, nor do I want my children drinking it either.

We are also aware that there is a lot of information online with regards to chloramine. We always tell our customers that although there is plenty of information out there, there are a lot of false/scaremongering articles online too and it is quite hard to decipher what?s the truth and what isn?t.

Chloramine is a bit more difficult to remove from drinking water than just chlorine and other contaminants as it requires a specific chloramine removal filter. We have now introduced a new drinking system (KIT6) which has a filter specifically designed to remove Chloramine in order to put your mind at ease should this water board start adding ammonia to their supply. Please see the link below.

Majority of the mains water boards in the UK have to publish a drinking water quality report online. Find out which water board you are on, look on their website (Usually you have to search for ?Water Quality Test Report?) enter your postcode (if needed) and it should give you a rough low down to your local area?s drinking water.

As a personal choice and personal opinion, we always go by the phase ?Better safe than sorry? So if you think your drinking water contains chloramine or just chlorine and other contaminants, then it may be best to purchase a drinking water filter kit to filter to give you contaminant free drinking water. We sell a huge variety to suit all budgets and would be cheaper than constantly buying bottled water. If you would like further advice on which system to choose and why, then please do not hesitate to get in contact with us.
