UV: The Importance of Changing your Bulb EVERY 12 months.
A brief explanation why it is so important to check and clean your UV glass quartz sleeve EVERY YEAR
If you have a UV in your home, it is usually because you are on a Private Water supply.
A UV system kills bacteria, whereas in mains water, Chlorine is added to kill bacteria.
Therefore if you have a UV on your Private water, It is SO important that it is working correctly.
For a UV to work efficiently, you need to change your UV bulb EVERY 12 months.
After 12 months, the UV light isn't as powerful, therefore may not kill all the bacteria in your water. This would allow water to pass through without being fully treated directly in to your home and drinking water. Which can make you very poorly. Should this happen, you would then have to pump chlorine through your home to kill any bacteria after the UV, as a UV would only kill bacteria BEFORE it goes into your home. It cannot treat water that is already in your home.
Not only should you check your quartz sleeve when you change bulbs, you also need to ensure that the lamps are fitted correctly, and tightened up sufficiently with no leaks. Otherwise again, your UV may not work correctly. If water enters the bulb lead connectors, it will trip your electrics and possibly blow your bulb and PSU.
A lot of newer UV systems have lamp life count downs and alarms to signify when a bulb needs changing. To reset the life AFTER a new bulb has been installed, you may need to press the reset button for 30-60 seconds.
It is so easy for a UV system to leak and cause problems if it is not installed or checked correctly. Therefore unfortunately, there are no warranties available with UV systems or UV parts.
