UV: The Importance of Cleaning your Glass Sleeve
A brief explanation why it is so important to check and clean your UV glass quartz sleeve EVERY YEAR
If you have a UV in your home, it is usually because you are on a Private Water supply.
A UV system kills bacteria, whereas in mains water, Chlorine is added to kill bacteria.
Therefore if you have a UV on your Private water, It is SO important that it is working correctly.
For a UV to work efficiently, not only do you need to change your UV bulb EVERY 12 months, you also need to check your glass sleeve at the same time.
When checking your sleeve, you need to ensure that:
1) It is not broken, cracked, chipped or split, as this will cause a leak. Water will then get to the bulb contacts causing the unit to trip your electrics and possibly even blow your bulb or PSU. Water will also corrode your lamp leads. Should this happen, you would need to replace your sleeve, bulb, o ring/seals, PSU and lamp leads and could be costly.
2) To ensure the sleeve is clean with zero build up. The is because the glass sleeve protects the UV bulb from water. If the sleeve is dirty, the UV light cannot penetrate through it and bacteria would not be killed, allowing water to pass through without being treated directly in to your home and drinking water. Which can make you very poorly. Should this happen, you would then have to pump chlorine through your home to kill any bacteria after the UV, as a UV would only kill bacteria BEFORE it goes into your home. It cannot treat water that is already in your home.
To clean your sleeve, you would need to be very careful as the sleeves are fragile, and do go brittle over time. Warm soapy water should be used, ensuring all soap suds are washed off and that the sleeve is fully dry on the inside before reinstalling (otherwise as stated above, could cause the bulb and PSU to blow.
If your sleeve is coated with thick build up that cannot be removed, then you would need to purchase a replacement.
So it really is so important you check your quartz sleeve when you change your bulb.
It is so easy for a UV system to leak and cause problems if it is not installed or checked correctly. Therefore unfortunately, there are no warranties available with UV systems or UV parts.
